Clair M. Wescott Jr.

Clair M. Wescott, Jr., 89, of Lake of the Woods (LOW) passed away at home onThursday August 27, 2015 after a short illness.

Clair was born February 1, 1926 to the late Clair & Clara Wescott from Hornell, NY. A sister, Doris Haynes also preceded him in death.

Graduating from Hornell High School in 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy Sea Bee's Division in 1944 serving in the Philippines, China, Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Okinawa. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he attended Buffalo State University and graduated in 1950 with a B.S. Degree in Secondary Education. Clair worked for the Salamanca Central School District for 33 years as a teacher in Industrial Architectural Design and Drivers Education. Clair was an Assistant Football coach and as Varsity Basketball coach took his team to the NY State sectionals in 1953. Clair later became the Guidance Director and retired as the Salamanca HS Principal in 1982. He then became interim principal at Randolph HS in Randolph, NY until 1983.

Clair and his wife Verna J. moved to Fredericksburg VA in 1983 and built their home in LOW in 1985. Clair enjoyed building and working construction for other homes in the area, he created fine furniture and countless marble game boards.

Clair is survived by his loving and devoted wife Verna J., and 6 children. Mitchell Wescott of Thailand; Mark Wescott (Shirley) of Shippensburg, PA; Joseph Feichter of Frewsburg, NY; Patricia Hurt (Steve) of LaVergne, TN; Christine Flanigan of Atlanta, GA and Mary Wattle (Mark) of Erie, PA. Clair had 8 grandchildren, Michael, Katelyn, Jay, Kelly Jo (Sam), Jennifer, Samantha, Diana (Paul) and Jesse, along with 4 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and 2 brother-in-laws, Dennis Reed (Carol) of Rochester, NY and Thomas Reed (Annette) of Clovis, CA.

Clair was an active member of Kiwanis in Salamanca, NY and he and Verna were avid dancers as members of the Fredericksburg Round Dancers, Warrenton Shadow Vines, LOW Square Dancers, LOW Rapparounders, Richmond Rythym Rounders and Adcock's Crew.

Internment will be at 10:00 am at the National Cemetery in Culpepper, VA followed by a Celebration of Life mass at Trinity Episcopal Church at 825 College Ave., Fredericksburg VA.
