Dr. George Goldstein
Dr. George Goldstein, age 89, formerly of Swan Street, Salamanca, NY died Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Halcyon Hospice in Atlanta, GA.
Born on December 10, 1928 in the heart of The Bronx, New York, he was the son of the late Louis and Sarah Rawitz Goldstein. He was married on December 14, 1969 to the former Ruth Glasser who predeceased him on June 2, 2007.
Dr. Goldstein was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Panama until 1955. After attending optometry school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he moved to Salamanca in 1958 and opened up an optometry practice, helping the residents of Salamanca and the surrounding towns for over 35 years.
Dr. Goldstein greatly enjoyed all that the community had to offer, skiing during the winters and golfing during the summers for much of his life. He was also an avid card player, and was a regular on the local clam bake circuit. He was a member of Temple B’Nai Israel in Olean, NY, as well as many local organizations and clubs.
Surviving are: Daughters Debbie (Mike) Schenkel, Albany, NY and Leslie (Rick) Brown, Rockaway, NJ; and son, Larry (Jan) Goldstein, Marietta, GA, along with six wonderful grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Morty Goldstein, and a sister, Shirley Saltzman.
Funeral services will be held in the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, NY on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 10:30am. Burial will be at B’Nai Israel Cemetery, Olean, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Salamanca Public Library or Elkdale Country Club.
