Mr. Gayle N. Wolford, age 92, formerly of Ismuth Road, Carrollton, New York died Tuesday afternoon, February 10, 2009 at Olean General Hospital.
Born on November 20, 1916 in Corydon, Pa., he was the son of the late Edward and Orpha Nellis Wolford. He was married on May 15, 1946 to the former Eva Herrington who predeceased him on November 8, 2000.
Mr. Wolford was a veteran of WWII during where which he served with the 7 th Air Force in the Central Pacific. During the war he flew 30 missions as a B24 pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying cross with oak leaf clusters.
He was retired from Olean Wholesale Grocery Co-Op in 1978. Previously, he had owned and operated the Killbuck Kill Buck Store and he had worked for the former B & O Railroad.
Mr. Wolford was a former member of Elkdale Country Club.
Surviving are: a son, James (Wanda) Wolford, Wasilla, Alaska; a daughter, Judy Wolford, New York City; 3 granddaughters, Haley, Rhiannon, Larinda; a sister, Doris Lake, Marysville, California.
He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Pauline Bargy of Killbuck, New York and Val Jean Hall, Great Valley, New York.
Friends may call at the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, New York on Saturday from 1-2 P.M. at which time funeral services will be held with Pastor Donald Acker, of the House of Prayer, officiating.
Burial will be in Green Cemetery, Great Valley, New York.
