Henry VonRhode

Henry J. VonRhode, age 91, of 151 Clinton Street, Salamanca, New York died Wednesday evening, December 15, 2010 at The Absolut of Salamanca, Salamanca, New York.

Born on November 9, 1919 in Dunkirk, New York he was the son of the late Julius & Cecelia Manalak VonRhode. He was married on June 16, 1951 in St. Patrick's Church, Salamanca, New York to the former Margaret Quattrone who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army-Air Corp serving in the European Theatre during WWII. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.

Mr. Von Rhode was employed at the former Jamestown Lounge Company, Ellicottville, New York for 20 years. He also had worked at the Parkview Supermarket in Salamanca and part time at the former Boothe Upholstery in Ellicottville, New York.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish and a former member of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post #535. He enjoyed carving and woodworking, spending time in his garden and being with his family.

Surviving are: 2 daughters, Norene VonRhode, Marlene (Tim Haynoski) Pearson, both of Salamanca, New York; 2 grandchildren, Michael (Marcey) Pearson, Oklahoma, Holly Pearson, Tempe, Arizona; 3 great grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn "Rose" Caruso, Victor, New York; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by 1 sister, Julia Straight, and several step-brothers and step-sisters.

Friends may call at the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, New York on Saturday, December 18, from 10:00 – 11:30 A.M., at which time funeral services will be held with Rev. Patrick Melfi, pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish, officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca, New York.

Full military honors will be conducted at the funeral home by members of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post #535 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post #5296.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Ste. 6, Williamsville, New York 14221-7380.
