Lawrence Quigley

Mr. Lawrence Quigley, age 85, of Clinton Street, Salamanca, New York died Sunday evening, July 10, 2011 at Olean General Hospital following a long illness.

Born on May 27, 1926 in Salamanca, New York he was the son of the late Andrew and Pauline Elsen Quigley. He was married in St. Patrick's Church on July 7, 1951 to the former Alfreda Skudlarek who predeceased him on March 16, 1996.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the European Theatre during WWII. He was awarded the Army Occupation Medal, Good Conduct medal, WWII Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.

Mr. Quigley was employed by the Erie Lackawanna Railroad as a brakeman for over 35 years prior to his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish, the Holy Cross Athletic Club, former member of the Salamanca Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1002 and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Mr. Quigley enjoyed his lawn and gardening, and spending time with his family.

Surviving are: 3 daughters, Anne (David) Wiens, Gowanda, New York, Elizabeth (Tom) Brown, Houston, Texas, Catherine (George Haas) Quigley, Little Valley, New York; 2 sons, Thomas (Martha) Quigley, Fairmont Avenue, Salamanca, New York, Lawrence Quigley, Erie Street, Salamanca, New York; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a brother, William Quigley, Washington Street, Salamanca,, New York; 2 sisters, Mary Margaret (Matthew) Colomaio, Hornell, New York, Frances Crouch, Allegany, New York; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by 4 brothers, Robert Quigley, Michael Quigley, Patrick Quigley, Jack Quigley, and a sister, Ann Stowell.

Friends may call at the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, New York on Tuesday from 4-7 P.M.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday morning at 11 A.M. in Our Lady of Peace Parish with rev. Patrick Melfi, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca, New York

Full military graveside services will be conducted by members of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post #535 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post #5296.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Salamanca Rail Museum.
