Mecanna S. Metzler
Mecanna “Mac” S. Metzler, 108, of Salamanca, NY, died Friday, May 31, 2024 at Absolut Care, Allegany following a short illness.
Born January 11, 1916 in Salamanca, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Julia Speroni Sartori. She was married October 28, 1940 to her beloved Malcom Metzler, who predeceased her in 2004.
She attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School and Salamanca High School.
Mecanna had been employed briefly at the former Nies Drugstore, Salamanca, NY before she became a full-time mother and homemaker.
Mac was an avid bowler and was in a league until the age of 100! She was also a dedicated crafter and skillful quilter until the age of 107! Her family and friends all enjoy many quilts, wall hangings, and runners made by Mac. She loved to travel in the US and spent many winters in Ft. Myers Beach, FL after her husband’s retirement. She loved to knit and made many winter hats that she donated to Roswell or to Genesis House in Olean. She also loved playing cards, especially rummy, with friends and family.
Surviving are: a sister, Louise Kolkowski, Allegany, NY; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Metzler, West Seneca, NY; five grandchildren, Shawn (Lisa), Scott (Cindy), Michael (Katie) McKenna, Beth (Mark) Gelefsky, John Metzler; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Gail McKenna in 2010, a son, Charles Metzler in 2016, and six siblings.
There will be no visitation.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Peace Parish, 274 Broad Street, Salamanca, NY on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 10am with Rev. Charles Johnson, as celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, 665 Elm Street, Buffalo, NY 14203.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, NY.
