Sophia Backos

Sophia Backos, age 97, formerly of Allegany, NY died early Monday evening, October 8, 2018, at Salamanca Rehab & Nursing.

Born September 22, 1921 in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Demetria Bai Kunigaris.

She was an accomplished pianist and dress designer. Her passion was health and healing. Sophia was also loved and known for her sense of humor and the ability to stretch a nickel into five hundred dollars. She was adored by everyone who knew her, especially her daughter.

Surviving are: a daughter, Sharon Backos, Allegany, NY, and her half-sister, Pamela Backos, St. Clair Shores MI; a granddaughter, Dylaina (Shawn Mott) Young, Rochester, NY.

There will be no visitation.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to The Humane Society.
