Thomas Lea Smith
Mr. Thomas Lea Smith, age 101, formerly of 2 Washington Street, Salamanca, New York died early Saturday (November 29, 2008) morning at Absolute of Salamanca, Salamanca, New York.
Born on August 6, 1907 in Salamanca, New York he was the son of the late Sydney and Edna Jamison Smith. He was married to the former Josephine Subjeck who predeceased him on February 8, 1982.
Mr. Smith was employed as the City Editor and the Sports Editor at the Salamanca Press for 35 years retiring in 1974. He also owned Smith's Grocery at 2 Washington Street, Salamanca, New York for many years.
He was a member of former Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1002, All Sports Booster Club, and he started Salamanca Youth Activities. He was an avid golfer and member at Elkdale Country Club and worked in the pro shop at Elkdale.
Surviving are: a daughter, Slyvia Davis, 7 Newark Street Apt. 103B Sodus, New York; 5 grandchildren, Susan (Richard) Bartl, Batavia, New York, Mark (Julie) Davis, South Barrington, Ill, Michael Davis, Sodus, New York, Patrick (Jill) Andrews, Orchard Park, New York, Kelly (Lou) Potter, Allegany,New York; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one brother, Palmer Smith, Allegany, New York; one sister, Nea Cory, Salamanca, New York.
He was predeceased by 1 daughter, Barbara Andrews, 2 brothers, Julian Smith, Sydney Smith, and 1 sister, Phylis Oyer.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church with Rev. Michael Lonto, pastor, officiating.
The family suggests memorials to Home Care & Hospice, 1225 West Street, Olean, New York, the Salamanca Public Library Memorial Fund or Salamanca Public Library Memorial Fund or Salamanca Sports Booster Club.
