Vincent J Oliverio

Vincent J. Oliverio, 98, of Salamanca, NY died Wednesday afternoon, May 26, 2021 at home in Holiday, FL following a long illness.

Born March 30, 1923 in Salamanca, NY, he was the son of the late Rocco and Domenica Condina Oliverio. He was married April 27, 1950 in Italy to the former Angela Gioffré, who survives.

He was a graduate of Salamanca High School, Class of 1941.

Mr. Oliverio was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a sergeant and radio operator in the China Burma India Theatre during WWII. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He had been employed as a Brakeman/Conductor for the Erie Railroad for over 28 years, retiring in 1984. Previously, he had been the owner of the former Riverview Restaurant in Salamanca.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish, the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post 5296, and the former Moose Lodge. He was an avid pool player in his retirement and belonged to the Beacon Square men’s billiard league for almost twenty years.

Surviving besides his wife are: two daughters, Barbara (John) Silo, Jamestown, NY, Rita Oliverio, Clifton Park, NY; a son, Vincent (Jean) Oliverio, Ellicottville, NY; six grandchildren, Evan (Lauren) Silo, Philadelphia, PA, Renee (Trevor) Bricker, Charlottesville, VA, Nicholas Vincent Oliverio, London, Eric Oliverio, Buffalo, NY, Lucy Oliverio, Troy, NY, Olivia Moran, Albany, NY; five great-grandchildren, Giana Bricker, Jude Bricker, both of Charlottesville, VA, Ben Silo, Lila Silo, Emilia Silo, all of Media, PA; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Vecchiarella and Rose Burlingame, and four brothers, Cosmo Oliverio, Damien Oliverio, Joseph Oliverio, and Anthony Oliverio.

Friends may call at the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, New York on Thursday, June 3, 2021 from 5 – 7pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Peace Parish on Friday June 4, 2021 at 10:30 am with Rev. Mariusz Sierhart, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Salamanca Library, as both Vince and Angela are cancer survivors and avid readers.

Full military honors will be conducted by members of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post 535 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post 5296.
